Bacterial inactivation using pulsed light ArchiMer

Pulsed light is a new method intended for the decontamination of food surfaces using short, high frequency pulses of an intense broad spectrum. The effects of broad spectrum pulsed light on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, Listeria monocytogenes CNL, Pseudomonas fluorescens MF37 and Photobacterium phosphoreum SF680 populations on agar and in a liquid medium were investigated during this study. The sterilisation system generated 1.5 J cm(-2) per pulse with eight lamps for 300 mu s. In the case of surface-seeded cells, a 7.8, 8.14 and > 7.14 log reduction was obtained for L. monocytogenes, Ps. fluorescens MF37 and Ph. phosphoreum, respectively, after a single pulse of treatment. Probiotics may have many effects on health and development of fish larvae. One of the most promising is related to spinal conformation, though the mode of action is not clearly understood. The present study attempted to investigate the effects of two strains of lactic acid bacteria on associated microbiota, histological development and gene expression. Sea bass larvae were fed since 5 dph (day post hatch) with either a standard control diet (Diet C), or the same diet supplemented with Pediococcus acidilactici MA18/5M (Diet P), or with an autochthonous strain of Lactobacillus casei (X2; Diet L). In response to consumer preferences for high quality foods that are as close as possible to fresh products, athermal technologies are being developed to obtain products with high levels of organoleptic and nutritional quality but free of any health risks. Pulsed light is a novel technology that rapidly inactivates pathogenic and food spoilage microorganisms. It appears to constitute a good alternative or a complement to conventional thermal or chemical decontamination processes. Selection of lactic acid bacteria as candidate probiotics and in vivo test on Artemia nauplii ArchiMer

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from rotifer cultures in a marine hatchery to search for potential probiotics for marine animals. Fifteen strains were first selected among a total of 55, according to antibacterial activity against Vibrio sp. Among eight strains identified as Lactobacillus casei, four were highly adhesive, suggesting some ability for surface colonization. The other strains were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus dextrinicus, and Leuconostoc sp. To validate probiotic potential, Artemia were challenged against pathogenic Vibrio alginolyticus, with or without one of six selected LAB strains.
